How we calculate value
PurseWorth estimates the resale value of designer handbags by looking at what comparable bags are actually selling for — not just what they're listed for. A value shown on PurseWorth is a modeled estimate based on aggregated market data, not a formal appraisal.
Current status: we now pull live active listings from eBay for most bags on the site. Real listing data doesn't override the research-based model outright — it's blended in, and the more matching listings we find for a bag, the more they influence its estimate. Bags with few or no matching listings yet still fall back to the research-based model described below. We don't yet have access to confirmed sold prices (only active asking prices), which is why active listings are weighted lower than a confirmed sale would be.
What goes into an estimate
- Comparable sales — recent transactions for the same brand, model, size, material, color, and hardware combination
- Active listings — current asking prices across resale marketplaces, weighted lower than confirmed sales since asking price isn't always what a bag actually sells for
- Original retail price, including publicly documented brand price increases over time
- Recency — a sale from last month is weighted more heavily than a sale from a year ago
- A model-specific value trend — every model has its own historical pattern (some appreciate, some track the brand's own price increases, some decline steadily after retail). When we don't yet have enough comparable sales for a specific bag, this trend fills the gap rather than leaving a guess.
What can make your bag's actual value different
The value shown on every page is always for a mint-condition example of that model — the ceiling, not a guess at your specific bag. Use the calculator to adjust it down for your bag's actual condition. Beyond condition, the value can also differ based on:
- Physical condition — wear, staining, hardware tarnish, odor
- Whether you have the original box, dust bag, authenticity card, or receipt
- Authentication status — an unauthenticated bag typically sells for less
- Regional demand differences and where you choose to sell
PurseWorth values are estimates intended for informational purposes. They are not appraisals, and PurseWorth is not a party to any sale. The only way to know exactly what a bag is worth is what a real buyer is willing to pay for it.
